This can lead to mucus build-up in the middle ear. This mucus can become infected and cause ear infection symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Because ear infections often clear up on their own, treatment may begin with managing pain and monitoring the problem. Sometimes, antibiotics are used to clear the infection. Some people are prone to having multiple ear infections. This can cause hearing problems and other serious complications.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms<br \/>\nThe onset of signs and symptoms of ear infection is usually rapid.<\/p>\n<p>Children<br \/>\nSigns and symptoms common in children include:<\/p>\n<p>Ear pain, especially when lying down<br \/>\nTugging or pulling at an ear<br \/>\nTrouble sleeping<br \/>\nCrying more than usual<br \/>\nFussiness<br \/>\nTrouble hearing or responding to sounds<br \/>\nLoss of balance<br \/>\nFever of 100 F (38 C) or higher<br \/>\nDrainage of fluid from the ear<br \/>\nHeadache<br \/>\nLoss of appetite<br \/>\nAdults<br \/>\nCommon signs and symptoms in adults include:<\/p>\n<p>Ear pain<br \/>\nDrainage of fluid from the ear<br \/>\nTrouble hearing<\/p>\n<p>When to see a doctor<br \/>\nSigns and symptoms of an ear infection can indicate several conditions. It&#8217;s important to get an accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment.
