Could the beloved procedural drama “NCIS” be sailing towards the sunset? While fans might not be ready to say goodbye just yet, longtime star Brian Dietzen, who plays the ever-optimistic Dr. Jimmy Palmer, recently opened up about the show’s future, sharing his thoughts on a fitting ending – and what that might mean for everyone’s favorite medical examiner.

Season 40 Retirement Party for Jimmy Palmer?

In a candid new interview with Looper, Dietzen joked about the show’s longevity, predicting, “Season 40 is when we’ll stop.” He then playfully hinted at a fitting end for his character: “It’s very likely to happen with Jimmy’s retirement.

Don’t panic, Palmer fans! He quickly added with a laugh, “No, I’m not sure.”

Thriving on Unpredictability: The Secret to “NCIS”‘s Enduring Success

Dietzen, who has graced our screens as the affable Jimmy Palmer since 2004, attributes the show’s continued success to its ability to keep both the actors and the audience on their toes.

The cool thing is,” he revealed, “if you asked our writing staff or the other actors on this show, you wouldn’t get any similar answers, because I don’t think any of us are focusing on the show’s ending, given the ratings and how much fun we’re still having.

He emphasizes the importance of focusing on the journey, not the destination: “In my opinion, we should continue to focus on those great arcs. If the time comes – and, as you said, everything must come to an end – one of those arcs will lead us to the Promised Land and the ‘NCIS’ ending.

Bidding Farewell to a Legend: Navigating Mark Harmon’s Departure

Of course, no conversation about “NCIS”‘s future would be complete without addressing the elephant—or rather, the Gibbs-shaped hole—in the room. Mark Harmon’s departure after 18 seasons sent shockwaves through the fandom, and Dietzen acknowledges the bittersweet impact it had on the cast and crew.

On a personal note, I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with Mark and call him a friend for so many years,” Dietzen shared. “I feel the same way about everyone I’ve worked with there. For the past 20 years, it has been a wonderful, wonderful place.

He went on to describe the “massive change” that Harmon’s absence brought, but also highlighted the show’s ability to adapt and evolve.

“As people come and go from our set, it feels like you’re constantly meeting new family members and making new friends,” Dietzen mused

Sailing Onward: The Future Looks Bright for “NCIS”

Despite the inevitable changes that come with a long-running series, Dietzen remains optimistic about the future of “NCIS.” With a dedicated fan base, a talented cast, and a writing team that continues to deliver compelling storylines, there’s no telling how many more cases Gibbs’s protégés will crack.

And who knows, maybe we’ll get that Jimmy Palmer retirement party in Season 40 after all.
